Upgraded from Photoshop CS2 to CS3. When I right click on a tif image in windows explorer the icon is there for PS CS3 and it will open. When I right click on a jpg image the PS CS3 is not in the list. I select open with and browse to Photoshop in Program files and click on it. It does not add it to the list. I have tried the always open with box as well and it will not work. Before I upgraded I could double click a jpg image or right click and open with CS2 so something has changed and I cannot get it to work.

Did you check the box says "always use this program to open the file"?

Yes, I have tried it with and without checking the box. I checked preferences in Bridge CS3 and it shows PS CS3 for JPG. If I go to Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder options and File types I can see three JPEG types all associated with PS CS3. If I double click on a jpg image then it says "filename jpg is not a valid Win32 Application."

Bearing in mind that you may not be able to undo this, you could delete all jpeg types form Tools/Folder Options/Types and then start over. You could create a System Restore Point before starting.

RESOLUTION: I spoke with Adobe Technical support, reinstalled and did many things without success. They decided it was a Microsoft problem. I spent time with Microsoft 800 642 7676 and they solved the problem but discovered that it was an Adobe problem. Open Tools, Folder options, File types and find jpg (there are three) and look below to see if it says Change and Restore or Change and Advanced. If it says Change and Restore then set the file association (temporarily) to Windows Fax Viewer which is one of the recommended choices. That will then result in having it state Change and Advanced. Click on Advanced. Select Edit. Now you see the full path of the application and you need to browse to Program Files, Adobe, Adobe CS3 and photoshop.exe and select it. Now lower down it says Application. Make certain it says Photoshop. Now that jpg will be associated with Photoshop CS3. Do the same for the other two and any other extensions that are not working properly. Now when you right click and open with you will see Photoshop CS3 and can check the box (if you want) to always open with it and then when you double click on a picture with jpg it will open in Photoshop. Unless you do this the browse in Open With does not fix the problem. Microsoft indicated that the help menu does not provide this other path. The corruption in the first place is related to installation of Adobe Photoshop CS3 and is NOT a Microsoft problem.

And, as I said last time this perennial problem came up, consider having Windows Picture and Fax viewer to "Open" and Photoshop to "Edit".

That way you can view the pictures without firing up Photoshop every time (and page through a folder full!) and still have the right-click option to open in Photoshop or Camera Raw.
