get rid of gradients

please take a look at this:

i’ve made a rainbow effect with "gradient overlay" but what i really want is the same (colored bars next to eachother) but without the gradient effect. how do i do that?

i’ve made a rainbow effect with "gradient overlay" but what i really want is
the same (colored bars next to eachother) but without the gradient effect. how
do i do that?

Easiest way: create a custom gradient that doesn’t blend from one color to the next.

Or, just use the rectangular marquee to make a selection, fill it with color, move the selection marquee over, fill it with color, repeat until you’ve filled the entire area.

I understand the second method and it gives me what I was looking for but your first suggestion leaves me puzzled: is there a "do not blend" function when using gradients? where do I find that? how does that work? Are you talking about the "blend mode" menu item in the gradient overlay popup dialog? what setting do you recommend? right now I have it on "normal" which seems to be the default setting.

You create a custom gradient. Place the triangles very close together; it blends between the little triangles. If the triangles in the blend touch, no blending occurs.

where do I find that? how does that work?

Click on a gradient in the list and edit it, or create a new gradient.

Nope, I’m talking about the place where you can create a custom gradient inn the list of preset gradients.

allright, i’ve set the "squares with triangle on top" very close together (one every 1%) but when i zoom in (like 400%) on the result, it’s still a gradient! maybe it won’t be noticeable if you print it or export it as jpeg (which is what i need to do).
i’m still not sure what the "squares with triangles" ABOVE the color bar do, as do the "outline sqaures" over there as well.
