It is unbelievable that Adobe keeps aliva this hoax. In photoshop, they use 72 ppi, not dpi.

I would appreciate, if somebody at Adobe answered to my question.

I consider this 72 ppi hoax as the most common misconception in the whole ITC sector.

Read the arguments at

In what way is Adobe perpetrating a hoax? You are free to choose any resolution for your images, from 1ppi to 9999.999ppi.

Adobe does not recommend, force, or lock you into any ppi number at all. You choose it yourself. Further, if you are referring to the 72ppi that is the default when using Save For Web, those pictures are assumed to be destined for WEB viewing, where ppi, as your source points out, is irrelevant. Pixel dimension is the only thing that matters.

This has been discussed numerous times here on the forum. Here’s a link if you’re interested:

Unfortunately there is no "Right and Wrong".

The normal convention is that pixels (ppi) are picture elements in an image file and dots (dpi) are what a printer puts on the paper.

They tend to get used interchangeably (Adobe uses both in different places).

In the article that the OP links, it is stated that Save for Web does not use any resolution. The res might be useful if you import the images in Powerpoint, etc.

While Ho is technically correct, Photoshop breaks up badly with ppi sizes of less than 10 (fonts work oddly).

The OP must be on crack. PPI is the correct terminology, as John points out. What particular resolution should be the screen default, if (as the link says) there is no one screen PPI that works on all machines.

well, that’s true. all ppi (or dpi) is is a meta field to tell the output device how to render. save for web is designed to strip out all that data to get you as small a file size as you want (i know you know this pierre, just using your comment as a jumping off point). 🙂

Photoshop breaks up badly with ppi sizes of less than 10 (fonts work oddly).

is that photoshop’s fault? or the font’s fault? aren’t there special fonts designed for small sizes? (iirc, they’re called pixel fonts or something?)

In photoshop, they use 72 ppi, not dpi.

I don’t think this is the core of the OP’s argument. He/she is simply stating that Photoshop uses ‘ppi’ while the article uses ‘dpi’.

What the article focuses on is that 72 dpi or ppi has no relevance for screen display. I see no reason to assume the OP is on crack or to make fun of the comments.

Does anyone here really use 72 ppi images? Web designers and video artists do not.

Adobe was slow in changing references from dpi to ppi. Perhaps they are taking their time in ridding themselves of the silly 72/96 ppi concept as well.

is that photoshop’s fault?

Photoshop’s. Even Adobe’s own fonts will not display correctly when the resolution is 1 or 2. But then, when would a resolution that low really be needed. I don’t consider it something that needs to be fixed.

Read the whole article, yet it doesn’t say anything about scanners (most of which use dpi) and what you SHOULD be setting.

But of course, we all know that this is yet another John Joslin conspiracy.

So to summarize:
– Break up of the Beatles
– 9/11 Mastermind
– "New" Coke
– Hindenberg Disaster
– Enron Collapse
– Watergate Break-in
– All Spam
– Global Warming
– Gas Prices
– Killed the Electric Car
– Bonjour Service
– 72 dpi myth

John Joslin, evil doer, mephisto, meme…

It’s probably so images intended for the screen will print at the same size they appear on-screen.

How seriously can you take an article set in Comic Sans, anyway 🙂

From the linked article:

We still frequently hear the very bad advice: "Screens show images at 72 dpi, so scan all your images for the screen at 72 dpi"

This is the first time I have ever seen this advice.

Despite the "For Dummies" appearance and tone (which — for me — gets in the way of the message), Wayne Fulton does provide useful and practical information on scanning.

It seems that someone has been confused by the ‘hoax’.

This is the first time I have ever seen this advice.

Buko needs to read the half million pages on the net <http://www.google.com/search?q=scan+images+72+dpi> that discuss this.

I think I will not read them. I seem to be scanning quite well without doing so.

I think the 72 ppi was the screen res of the 1984 Mac (first in DTP) that carried over into Photoshop’s View > Print Size function.

Now, you can enter your own screen resolution in Photoshop so that the document is properly magnified on the screen to display the Print Size.

This screen resolution can be entered in Preferences > Units & Rulers

"How seriously can you take an article set in Comic Sans, anyway"

The fix:

Remove Comic Sans from your hard drive, like I did.

Then the only stuff you see in the atrocious font on scantips.com are the rasterized images.

Just for the record:

I LOVE the content at Scantips.com and have recommended it to many people over the years.

I continue to hate and rail against Comic Sans.
