error mesage when trying to download from camera

windows xp..message " the specified I/O operation on\device\hard drive 3\dr4 was not completed before the time out period expired..I’ve just has a reboot of my system and camera raw 3.7 correctly installed.however, when i try to download photos I get so many thumbnails interspersed with fractured frames and then loads of timed out messages.using nikon d80 with universal card reader.thanks

I don’t know what the problem would be, but if you’re using any downloader utility to pull the images off your memory card, then the first thing I’d try doing is simply using Windows Explorer for that purpose. If you can’t just drag & drop the folder on your card to a folder on your hard disk, then I’d guess that to be an error with the card or perhaps the reader itself. If you have another card, take a few photos with your camera onto it, and try downloading those to see if that card seems any better.

Thanks Daryl, I.ve just managed to download all 100 of pics by using direct connection from camera to comp (instead of card reader), interestingly, it showed the first 57 pics as thumbnails and the remainder as fractured thumbnails, I thought I was going to lose 43 pics but when I downloaded they all showed up….what do I know?..regards Steve.
