I don’t know if this is a windows thing or a photoshop thing but here’s my question. If I want to open an image with PS, I usually right click on the image icon and select "OPEN WITH" and select Photoshop CS2. (I’ll get to the CS3 thing in a second). No problems doing this without CS3 installed on the system. Once CS3 is installed and I want to open an image using CS2, I right click on the icon and select "OPEN WITH" and CS2 is not there anymore. So I do an "OPEN WITH" and "Choose Program". I hunt down Photoshop CS2 and select it. BAM! CS3 opens the image. Even though I told windows XP pro that I wanted the image to be opened by CS2, CS3 opens the image. I want to keep my image (.JPG) association extension set to Windows Picture & Fax Viewer so I don’t want to make the association change. Is my machine haunted? or is anyone else seeing this.

Systems usually default to the newest version. so if you want to open in a particular app that app should be open already and you need to do an open from inside the app.

Fix it in Windows Explorer Tools > Folder Options… > File Types > Advanced.

If "Advanced" is not available click "Default".

Well, I found the solution. I noticed this with PS version 6. Since I have 6, 7, & CS2 on my system, the name of the .exe file for version 6 is PHOTOSHP.EXE but the description of the exe file is Adobe Photoshop. The right click OPEN WITH menu takes the description name along with the file name but only displays the description name in the menu. If the file name is the same , as in with PS 7 & CS2 "Photoshop.exe" windows opens the latest version. If you rename the version 7 .exe file to Photoshop7.exe, then the image will open with version 7 only. Now when I right click on the image icon and do an "OPEN WITH" I have all 3 versions to choose from; 6, 7 & CS2. You cannot get this if your file names are all the same. It’s a windows thing!

I am having a similar problem..but…

In my case, I have PS Elements 5, Lightroom and CS3 Extended. I am only able to open with Elements. The others are not even listed nor can I choose them.
