We in need of a new color printer for our 4-man graphic design department. It will be used mostly for color proofs (doesn’t have to be pinpoint accurate, just relative), inhouse fliers, occasional business cards, etc. It needs to be a wide-format printer as well, because the majority of our color proofs will need to be printed on 11×17 paper. It must work for Macs (running OS9.2) and have the option for network connectivilty.

Our last printer the HPdesignJet 2600N was a disaster. It was hard to feed paper into. The duplex unit broke on day 2. It jammed consistently. Printer shifting was so bad it was almost impossible to print business cards. And finally, a factory defect killed the thing.

Ideally, we’d like to spend less that $1500. What I’m looking for is a sturdy, trustworthy printer that will last.

Epson’s new 4400 looks like a winner and is almost in your price range. More on it here:

In the wide format high quality printers there are some suprisingly good ones from Canon well your budget. They do lack net built-in network capability but you can add third party plug-ins for under $100 that will even let you link via airport.

However to the models. The recently discontinued s9000 did it all, 6 tanks of pigmented ink, borderless wide carriage, receently discontinued. Some places still have it prices around $500, most now under $200, a couple show $150 but they don’t really have any.

The replacement i9100 has the same "list" with current street price just under $400. Pretty much the same specs with a few minor improvements.

The Canon i9900 due out next month about $100 more will sport 8 ink tanks, firewire in addition to USB and some other nice additions.

Give them a look.

The original s9000 series had field replaceabe print heads. A sort of unlock and pull, then push and lock. They weren’t cheap, around $150, but I never heard of anybody needing them.

The consumer model Canon’s (including this one and it’s successors) use dye inks, NOT pigment.
