Can somebody tell me what the blending modes are doing … I mean, precisely? Of course I can find plenty of books and websites with verbose explanations and numerous examples but what I am looking for—to no avail yet—is a complete list with the proper formulas (or algorithms). Does such a list exist? If so, where?

I don’t think anyone knows exactly what they do. You try them out and if it looks good you use it. <g>

The early versions of Real World Photoshop had basic descriptions of the math behind many of the blending modes. Try finding, say, RWPS3 on eBay and check that out.

The actual algorithms in some cases will not be available because they are propriety, but most of the common ones can be found with a bit of GoogleFoo. I think there is a pretty good explaination in the help files or manuals
