Hi,

While making one of my frequent visits to the land of Ctrl-Alt-Del, I noticed in the Task Manager a setting for "Base Priority." (To find it yourself, you can right-click a process in the "Processes" tab, or select View->Select Columns.)
Does anyone know if this setting does what I think it does? That is, if I change the setting for, say, Bridge from Normal to High, will it up the speed of Bridge a little bit while slowing down other programs I have open at the same time?

Thanks,

Michael,

In theory, yes, as more CPU processing is allocated then to Bridge. However, I’m not sure how measurable a change you’d notice, and there is some risk of causing a process to become corrupted. Generally speaking, it is likely best to leave things alone although at least in elevating Bridge, you have some reasonable idea about what the affected process is and does. Some of the more obscure and system-related processes probably pose a greater risk to modify. The only time I’ve done a change in priority was when I was getting too impatient for a virus scan, spyware scan, or other such process to complete and perhaps everything on an older system seemed at a standstill. However, what I did in that case was lowered the priority of the resource-consuming process so I could go accomplish some short task, then return the modified priority to whatever level it was at originally.

Regards,

Daryl
