Layer Mask not working properly

I have an action that I created in Photoshop CS2. I used layer masks to be able to edit each layer. All of the masks work fine except for one. On this one layer (we’ll call it layer 1) the mask works fine at first, but if I click onto another layer and then come back to layer 1, the mask won’t work!

Instead of painting to reveal the layer beneath it, the brush starts painting black. Why would the layer mask work fine until I click on another layer?

When clicked on the mask, what color is chosen for the Brush? It won’t be the same as for an ordinary layer.

What happens if you hit X and then paint?

Hi Ed, thank you for replying!

When I click on the mask I keep the black as my foreground and white as the backgroumd, just like I would normally do when painting on a layer mask. And it works fine the first time I edit Layer 1 as long as it’s the first layer I touch when editing. If I click on another layer, the mask no longer works and the brush only paints.

Clicking x and painting doesn’t change anything.
If I go into channels instead of layers and edit the layer mask there, it works just ine. But come back into layers and it doesn’t work again.

That’s because you select the layer, and not the mask. You must shift-click or alt-click the mask as an extra step in the action to select it.

Really? When did they change that? I’ve only ever had to click on a mask to select it to paint on. And if you switch to a mask on another layer, you must click on that mask.

If that’s not the way it’s working, I suggest resetting Preferemnces as per the FAQs.

I just do a simple click, with no modifier key.

Simple click on the mask puts you in mask edit mode with the image layer visible; alt+click on the mask puts you in mask edit mode with only the mask itself visible. Never tried ctrl+click on the mask; does it create a selection from the mask like ctrl+click on the layer image icon?

Yes, but have you ever tried recording same in an action? You need to ‘fool’ the action to record the selection of the mask via the alternative selection methods.

Yes.
