I have a rather large animation created in CS3. When I use the "Save for Web" option, I get an error that there is not enough memory to complete the save. I need to save the animation as a gif. I have already allocated 100% of available RAM to Photoshop and still get the error. Suggestions?

It’s not RAM, it’s disk space (or scratch space) that’s the problem, I reckon.

Plus, if you’re using Windows, it is not advisable to allocate 100% RAM to Ps. Stick with the recommended 55%. It may cause the occasional slowdown, but you’ll have less lock-ups. 100% is asking for trouble.

I changed the scratch disk to an external hard drive with plenty of memory and still no luck. Help!

did you drop your RAM allocation to 55%

I have 1232 available. I have tried dropping the RAM allocation to 55%.The file is 119 MB and contains about 300 layers and frames.

How many GB of RAM do you have?

This is different than Available free space on your hard drive.

I’m sorry. I meant that Photoshop says that I have 1232 MB of RAM available (of which I am now using 55% per your suggestion). I have 1.5 GB of RAM and my C drive properties says that I have 7.36 GB of Free space on my hard drive.

Is there something I can do to make the file size smaller. Would that even help?

dupe your file and delete half the layers see what happens.

"Save for web" – flatten the file first. Your file size is also too big.

flatten the file first.

that would make it hard to do an animation, wouldn’t it?

Oops, I wasn’t paying attention….

Try "Save as" instead of "Save for Web". Save for Web appears to have some restrictions – layers being one. It flattens images, converts 16 to 8-bit, strips exif data etc, etc.
