My computer recently adopted this strange habit: Whenever I open CS3 or Lightroom, while loading either I get an Application Error window, usually several times, alluding to "SVCHOST.EXE" The error message is:

The instruction at "0x00aa9eee" referenced memory at 0x000000000". The memory could not be "written".

Then is says, Check OK to terminate program or CANCEL to debug.

The latter does nothing. The former eventually removes the error panel and loading of the program resumes. When loaded both programs seem to work okay.

I tried Googling SVCHOST.EXE and found conflicting information–that it is a necessary Microsoft program and also that it is used by virus writers for bad things. No indication of how to tell the difference, or correct this error.

I should add that the same window appears once during general bootup of the computer. No idea what program loading triggers it. The Adobe programs seem to be the only ones that trigger successive appearances of this error window.

Any suggestions what I should do?

Alfred,

This is of no help in solving your problem where I have no suggestions to offer, but true enough, SVCHOST.EXE is a necessary Microsoft program. If you launch Task Manager, you’ll likely find multiple entries of it in the Processes listing. I have 8 for example. If you launch the Services applet and check the properties of various services, you’ll begin to find many that get launched via SVCHOST.EXE, leaving me to think that some are TSR (terminate and stay resident) services corresponding with the SVCHOST.EXE entries in Task Manager, while others may be services that are invoked only as needed.

Problem solved—I think.

After much Googling (during which I tried a half-dozen suggested remedies to no avail) I found reference to a possibly corrupted printer or scanner driver. I deleted and reinstalled the driver(S) in my wireless HP All-in-one and sure enough the Svchost.exe error window has not reappeared, at least so far.

Apparently the more common problem producing this error message is a corrupted Windows Update driver. I replaced that, however, but the problem continued. (I tried Dell’s tech support chat service but after a couple of hours that got me nowhere, although the techie did seem to be focusing on the Update issue.)

I report all this in case it is of help to someone else.
