Prints don’t resemble what I see on screen

I’m using Elements 5, on Windows XP (Home). I combined two Nikon D80 RAW images – one for the sky and the second for the main part of the picture. I then continued to edit the picture to my satisfaction. I repeated this for the other RAW pictures. They all looked good on screen, and I sent them for on-line printing. I was disappointed with the results – quite a few of the pictures seemed too green or had a yellow cast. Others were fine. I decided to print some myself – they too were not very good. They had a pinkish cast on them – again, others were fine.

I decided to get some printed at "Boots Chemist" on the High Street. These were better than the on-line pictures and my own attempts at printing. However, some pictures did appear too green. I came to the conclusion that I’m rubbish at editing and/or I should calibrate the monitor. Unfortunately, the more I read about doing so, the more apprehensive I become.

I’m concerned that I won’t be able to answer all the questions in the Wizard and if so, I will mess up the monitor and won’t be able to see anything on the screen. One book I was reading suggested skipping the adjustment of the LCD screen (probably because it wasn’t needed?). I remain confused and disappointed with my efforts – which took ages to achieve. Are there any "idiot guides" on calibrating the monitor?

You should invest in a hardware calibrator. Cheapest and easiest alternative is a Pantone Huey. Calibrating with this device is a 1-2-3 process.

You might also give some thought towards the monitor you are using. There are good monitors and less good monitors.

And after you calibrate your monitor, you should then go to the Elements forum down the Hall to the left. Not many folk using Elements in these parts.

I will look out for this. Incidentally, the monitor is an NEC Multisync LCD 175VXM+. Is this considered good or less good?

It appears I’m trespassing in the wrong Forum – I didn’t know there was an Adobe Windows Elements Forum. I’d better get back where I belong.

Thanks

Pam
