An inexpensive yet excellent 2D card for Photoshop is the Matrox G450 or G550. If you needs also involve good support of 3D graphics such as for gaming, then you’d be better off choosing one of the more currently produced cards based upon some flavor of GeForce or Radeon chipset. Either chipset should meet the 2D needs of Photoshop quite well although I think the older cards oriented specifically toward 2D imaging may provide slightly sharper 2D graphics.

This is for a client of mine, he does high quality digital photography and price is no issuee. He wants the best. This card will go into a P4 3.0GHz system. The main issue we ehave had with GeForce 4 cards is thee Adobe Gamma adjustmnets and the color correction settings. We want th best card that has no issues.

If 2D excellence is the goal then I will defend Matrox.

2D users are being eclipsed by the 3D crowd, and video card makers are obliged to follow the $$ trail. I just hope Matrox can hang in there! They make great cards.

I don’t know if it’s the best or not but I’ve been very happy with it, and no problem issues. It’s the ATI All-in-Wonder card. I got it to produce slide shows. It came with a lot of cables to hook up to about anything and everything, but I just hook it up to a VCR for now. I don’t know about DVDs or 3D stuff because I haven’t gone there yet.

Macintoshes seem to run Adobe applications okay. They all have ATI or NVidia video cards–and often, not very good ones.

The REAL answer depends on how much money you have to spend, and what else you want to do with the card.

If you’re a gamer, get 3d and go whole hog. Photoshops video requirements are quite minimal, although there are a lot of questions about it in this forum. One would think, generally, that because photoshop is a "graphics" program, it will perform better with a high end card. A high end 2d card may be better in extreme circumstances, but not usually.

If you had a lot of dough to spend, get a mid-level 2d card, and invest in more, FAST HD’s – like 7,200 rpm drives. The HD and the I/O are the bottleneck where photoshop is concerned.
