The main paradigm of Photoshop is non-destructive editing. However Adobe has loaded up the raw converter with processes that are not available in Photoshop and some still duplicate what is available in Photoshop.
Once the image is opened in PS from the converter the changes made to the image in the converter are irreversible.
I realize the raw file itself is not irreversibly altered by the converter but the working changes made to the image in the converter are all or nothing. If you want to go back and change something you did to the image in the converter after applying adjustment layers in Photoshop you have to start over again in the converter or use some complex substitution tricks. Adobe made arbitrary deisions to place some image processing paramenter only in the converter and not in PS where they can be applied as adjustment layers or smart objects.
That is why they give you the option of opening tif and jpegs in the ARC, so you can use functions that should be available in PS itself but are only available in the ARC. Effectively you have to use two programs instead of one and one of the programs applies irreversible changes in its half of the processing sequence.
Even the smart programmers at Adobe can do some stupid things. Unless they will correct this and call it CS4 and thank you for your $200 upgrade tithe.
I guess that makes them smart programmers again.
