No idea how to use fonts with Photoshop CS3, did other graphics that were more advanced

marisza e – 09:10am Sep 4, 2007 Pacific

Oh Gees, I can complete difficult tasks but can’t figure out the simple ones. I am new to Adobe Photo Shop, just sixteen hours into it and I completed some difficult tasks as I am redoing my headers, and now I have to add the fonts.I am not intimidated by the layering or shadowing or html..I just can’t figure out how to use my fonts in Adobe Photoshop. I installed them. ..and some of them are on my PC…Impact…The file is TTF now. Adobe Photo Shop CS3 keeps giving me an error message saying that it won’t allow this file to come in. Help.

I am adding headers and centering my website..the first page is almost complete. I unzipped my font files. Sigh, this is draining sometimes. Wish someone could help.

It sounds as if you don’t know how the fonts work.

They’re not installed in Photoshop, they’re installed in Windows, Vista or whatever operating system your computer uses. Then PS reads the OS’s list of available fonts and makes them available.

So if you’re on Windows, Control Panel > Fonts > Add Fonts… You may need (and probably should, even if not required) to reboot the box to force Windows and PS to reinitialize the font list after you install new fonts.

Well, another HUGE mistake you are making is creating a web site in Photoshop. Photoshop is the most powerful commercial image editing program in the world. It does that better than any other program all around.

It also has some features that allow it to generate web pages. It does that almost worse than any other program in the world (Except perhaps for Microsoft Word)

You should use a web html authoring program, learn html coding and css styling, then use Photoshop to supplement your designs with graphics and images.

Any text you create in Photoshop and publish to a web site will not be readable by any of the search engines and will do you no good in setting you up as searchable on the internet.

OK, thanks for the feed back. I am not creating web pages. My site was created by a webdesigner and he is sick and can’t help right now.
He is a friend.
Anyway, I am just centering my site, and I know some html. I did a really good job with Photoshop to create perfect lines that match up to the lines on my site. I worked wonderfully.
I know some html…this is not my problem. My site looks wonderful, except for the fact that I am redoing my header….

Alone.

I know that the fonts are on my PC…I know they are not in Photoshop…I want to know how to load them into adobe photoshop and what files Adobe with accept….

Hope this makes sense and thanks again for the feedback.

I never said I was creating web pages in Photoshop. I said on my first question, that I am creating headers, new headers.
I spent 16 hours lining up the lines..you would have to be there. It was very difficult and redoing many other things on my site.

I just want to know about fonts and can we stay on that subject please I want to complete this to get on to other work…please help…soon. thx

marisza,

if the fonts are installed on your system then they should be available to you in PS.

* Open your image.
* click on the text tool (the big T in the toolbar)
* that should open up the text specfic toolbar
* choose the font you want to use
* click the mouse on your image and begin typing

If you wish to change the font, an easy way is to use the charater palette. With your text layer as the highlighted layer (current layer), you can select different fonts in the palette and see the change instantly on your image.

hope that helps!

Marisza, if you have a font in your "My documents" folder, that’s the wrong place for it. If the font is properly installed, then it should show up in Photoshop’s list of fonts. In case of doubt, open up your word processor and see if the font is available. If it’s not there either, then that’s an indication that it is not properly installed.

Also, if your site had been hand-coded by professionals, you need to fire them and find yourself some other professionals, fast. The coding is pretty awful, and the header GIF files are non-existent.

John come back..you are the first person with intelligent advice. my font is in my word processor…
I am redoing my headers…that is why I am installing the font and I redid graphics and centering the site..the site will be aligned and with header very soon and everything in working order..but it is under construction.I am not a web designer..but I will deal with it..it won’t look this bad, believe me.

NOw, I need to know where the fonts are in Photoshop..I am looking everywhere and don’t see any options..I will continue to look and come back. My fonts are installed…I know that for a fact…yes

I hate to ask something so obvious, but, have you opened your Character Palette?

Have you looked up at the Options Bar when you have your Type Tool selected in the Tool Box?

Do you see a drop-down menu? Have you opened it?

"I found the fonts in photoshop and I am ready to roll..yes" It would be strange if you could see the font in your word processor, but not in Photoshop, but I guess you’ve solved that problem.

If you’re using some special font, this font needs to be turned into an image, because other people won’t have that font on their systems. But I guess you know this already, because that’s why you want to use the font in Photoshop. Good luck finishing the site with the appearance you want it to have!

Typical Adobe shite, the font menu is not consistent through the apps. Marisza probably found the font needed at the bottom of the font list. Wish Adobe would not create these font separators in the font lists, or at least be consistent.

It would be nice to have a choice. This is another sucky aspect of Adobe apps.
