When I try to use the move tool I get an error message "could not use move tool because target channel is hidden". How do I fix this?

Go to the channels palette and unhide the target channel or choose the image’s Composite channel (RGB or CMYK). My guess is tat you are on an Alpha channel that has teh visibility turned off.

I have the same problem and every time i want to move an object/text/image (it only happens in one specific file) i have to select the "RGB" channel in the channels pallet. Is there a setting that i can change to make this permanent so i don’t have to select the composite channel EVERY TIME i want to move an item in a layer (this happens with all layers).
How can i know if i am on an Alpha channel and it has the visibility set to off?

Most probably, you are selecting alpha-channels by accidentally tapping [Ctrl+4] ([5], [6], etc.) keys.
