Hello all,

I’m running PSCS2 on Windows XP sp2. When I make a png file with either PS or ImageReady and view it in IE7, it is too dark. The file is correct in Firefox and Irfanview and even when placed as the background on my desktop, but not in IE.

To test this further I made some squares and filled them solid with specific colors and put them on a web page. If I filled a square with a RGB value of, say, 60/20/5 and viewed it in Firefox, it would measure 60/20/5. (I used a stand-alone color picker to compare everything to make sure my eyes weren’t going crazy.) But in IE7 it would measure something like 49/16/3.

Thing is, when I make png files in other image programs, they do not exhibit this behavior in IE. So it must be something PS is doing, but I can’t figure it out. I have my color space set to sRGB.

Thanks,
Ed

Ed,

I don’t know, but could IE7 be colour managed? like PS certainly is?

Let’s assume this. And then consider this:

Lets pretend your monitor is too bright. You create an image and because the monitor is too bright you decide to make it darker.

Now it looks right. Next you see the image in Firefox (Non Colour managed), your monitor is, of course, still too bright, so the image still looks good. In spite of it really being too dark.

Now let’s assume IE7 is colour managed but uses a different profile than PS. this can introduce a colour rendering on screen that differs from that of PS, because PS is governed by another profile.

Also, the monitor might not be calibrated at all.

Things to try:

1. Calibrate and profile your monitor. Since you have PSCS2 you also have Adobe Gamma. This is in Windows’ Control Panel.
Run this, and save the resulting .ICC file. Give it a useful name.

2. Find out how IE7 manages colour. Is there a selectable file or policy?
