Hi there.

I do lots of stuff for tv and need to quickly add gaussian blur to entire screens I design (whilst preserving layers). I can do this in After Effects using an adjustment layer but can I in Photoshop?

I am using CS2.

So – I want to add a layer to the top of my layers palette that will apply a gaussian blur to everything below it?

Possible? Workaround?

Thanks in advance

Not possible.

In CS3, you can apply ‘smart filters’ to ‘Smart Objects’, and change it at a later time.

But it is not quite the same functionality as a Filter layer, because you are limited by one mask for all the filters assigned to your smart object.

How about – copy all the layers you want to blur, merge them, copy that and blur it. At least you can back off on the transparency of the blurred layer for some control, and position that layer in your stack if want to show something ‘not’ blurred.

Some of this could be recorded as an action..

Just thinking with a keyboard, hope it helps.

As you prob know AE will import the PSD file. An alternative is to place (not embed) the PSD into an illustrator file and apply the blur there. you will have an AI file linked to the PSD file so any changes to the PSD will be automatically reflected in the AI file. This may suite your work flow but working directly in AE will prob get a better result (as you said adding an adjustment layer to the PSD composition). Personally i think that this is a lot of mucking around for little gain. AE is prob your best bet.

Very easy,

1. Make top layer active.
2. Hold down Ctrl+Shift+Alt and click the e Key, this will make a new merged top layer and not effect the layers below. Now you can blur this new top layer and turn it off and on with the eye.
