Hi

I’m sure that this is in the help file some where but as usual I seem unable to phrase the question to elicit the answers I need!

Simply it seems that when I create a document and then select save as, sometimes I have a reduced file extension list. ie my current document has awork space of rgb16 yet I am unable to save as a jpeg as the option is not there.

Can someone throw some light on this?

thanks

Ian

You really need to do a bit of background reading.

You can keep getting answers here but, as long as you don’t understand the underlying principals of image editing, and the basic way Photoshop works, you are going to continue struggling.

RGB/16 (not rgb16!) means that the image is in 16 Bits/Channel and this cannot be saved as a JPEG – you need to convert it to 8 Bits/Channel.

I don’t think you can save a 16 bit image as jpeg. Try converting it to 8 bit.

There’s quite a few things you can’t do to a 16 bit image in photoshop.

By for now.

Yes, you cannot save a 16 bit file as a jpeg. If you wish to keep the file as 16 bit you will need to save it in another format such as tiff or psd. If you need to save it as a jpeg then you will need to convert to 8-bit first.

Well that’s pretty definite then!

Thanks

I have a feeling that the online manual supplied is not a full version as quite often when I search nothing is found. I suspect that the combined suite helpfile is not as comprehensive.

I work on a few forums helping out and teach, the problem as always is not the answer it’s knowing the correct question. My foray into Photoshop has left me amazed at what it can do and I do understand why it is the definative program, it’s just a pity that Adobe don’t use the same language as everyone else!

I do find it confusing and despite copious reading of the Bibles and articles etc I still discover new things.

thanks Again

Ian
