brightness and contrast does not function well in Photoshop CS3

When I try to adjust the brightness and contrast of a greyscale (Sgrey) document which is filled with 255 (white) nothing happens.
Whilest it does work for other greyscales.
Can anyone explain? (In CS2 this works fine)

If you check the ‘Use Legacy’ checkbox in the Brightness/Contrast d/box it will respond in the same way as did previous versions.
