I use Photoshop CS3 and I was really hoping that the updater would have been fixed in this version, but I can see that it hasn’t.

Does anyone else experience this scenario? And what do you do about it?

1. Turn on Photoshop and open an file to begin editing
2. A second or two later the updater turns on and says "do you want to update now or later?"
3. stupidly, I choose "now" because I know if I choose later I’ll forget.
4. It’s stupid because the damn updater then tells me I have to turn off Photoshop – which i just turned on and am using!
5. okay, fine, I finish what I’m doing and close PS.
6. Then the damn updater says I have to close Firefox (and Opera). Holy crap! I’m trying to WORK here! Why does it need me to close all my apps?
7. THEN, after I close them, it still won’t run, because it considers Thunderbird to be Firefox and continues to tell me I have Firefox open (when I don’t) because Thunderbird is open.
8. Assuming I get through all of that, the updater runs, and then I have to RESTART the entire computer.
9. okay, so even that is fine – I naively think I’m done when Windows is up and running again. BUT NO, when I open Photoshop, it asks to run the updater AGAIN. Repeat from line 2.

How to fix the updater:
– have an external process that runs at a scheduled (by me) time to run the updates on the Adobe products
– ONLY REBOOT ONCE! If you have to download 4 things, download and install all of them before I have to reboot.
– Explain why I have to close non-Adobe apps. Yes, I can guess, but it sure is annoying to have the updater demand that I shut down ALL of my work applications simply to do an update.
– tell me what I’m updating (beyond the simple "InDesign update" message). Ironically, I thought the update today would be able to happen as I wasn’t using InDesign – I was using PHOTOSHOP, but I still had to shut everything down.
– and lastly, DON’T TELL ME TO TURN OFF THE PROGRAM I JUST TURNED ON. That, along with the million reboots is easily the most annoying thing. I mean, I turned on Photoshop because I needed to edit an image, not because I was bored and wanted to see if there was an update!

Easy answer: don’t use the Updater, use the Adobe Download site.

Heh. Windows is funny.

Just remove your network connection and turn the bloody updater off.
