When I see the opening screen, for Windows I hold down Ctrl+Alt+Shift. I do NOT get a prompt to delte the Adobe Photoshop Settings File. Thus, I cannot reset my defaults. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks, Jeannine

You need to hold that key combo down IMMEDIATELY after launching Photoshop.

Even better, hold those keys down, THEN click on the application icon to launch Photoshop.

You have to do it really quickly. Put your fingers over the Ctrl+Alt keys, launch PS and hit all three keys immediately.

I kinda sucks this way, I wish they’d fix it so you could choose to reset the prefs the next time you open PS.

Phos: you must have really long fingers to hold those three keys down and still launch the app. I seem to recall if you held the keys down prior to launching, you end up with something else to do with Windows.

Hmm…Holding the Command + Option + Shift (the Mac equivalent) is easily performed with just my thumb and forefinger. Then I click on the app icon. I just tried it with ImageReady CS2, and got the dialogue—which I dismissed.

Surely you can do this with your thumb and 2 fingers on a Windows keyboard? Or, now that I look at a picture of Windows’ modifier key layout < http://content.answers.com/main/content/wp/en-commons/thumb/ 0/05/180px-Keyboard-left_keys.jpg>, little finger covering CTRL + Shift, and thumb on ALT?

Or am I missing something?

Thank you, thank you. I held all three before and while launching. Worked!

The fingering is easy enough, it’s the timing that is tricky.

No wonder a lot of new users think they have reset preferences when they haven’t!

"…it’s the timing that is tricky."

What I suggested obviates the timing problem.

Edit/Addendum: Or do I still not understand that holding the key combo before launching the app does something different under the Windows OS?

Phos…it can be done in windows land….it just takes a really long time for windows to open…I almost got scared there!

In Windows, if the Alt key is pressed when you click on an icon, with or without Ctrl and Shift, you open the preferences for the icon. You can press and hold Ctrl+Shift, click to start Photoshop, and immediately press and hold Alt.

That’s it!

What a bloody performance! Adobe should really do something about this since it appears that the preferences have to be reset with such regular monotony. (Although funnily enough I never had to do it!)

I can’t remember the last time I had to reset prefs.

PS 4.0.1, maybe?

Rob
Could you kindly list the files and locations that you backup. I had these for earlier versions but I know they locations have changed in CS3. I am using Windows version.
Thanks rod

It’s in the "Application Data" folder. Either backup the Photoshop folder or the Photoshop Settings folder.
