When I enter text in Photoshop (CS2) some of the letters are misplaced, eg when I type ‘a’ it comes up as ‘q’ and vice versa. This happens whatever font I am using, and it has only just started happening. It only does it in Photoshop so I can get round it by typing the text in Word and cutting and pasting it, but I would appreciate any advice on what might be causing the problem. Is using System Restore my only option?

I’m using Windows XP, with 2Gb of RAM.

Only in Photoshop? Is this a recent development? Did you reset Preferences as per the FAQs?

If it persists after resetting your preferences, check to see what language the OS is set to. The easiest way to check this is to right-click on the task bar, select Toolbars > Language bar, and then in the right side of the task bar, to the left of the system tray/notification area, you will see a question mark (tooltip Help), to overlapping rectangles (tooltip Restore) and a triangle pointing down (tooltip Options). Click on the Options triangle and pick Settings. You should get a display like this:

If you have languages other than English (US or GB/UK/whatever), remove them.

Clicking on the Restore overlapping-rectangles in the taskbar will remove the Language bar.

This should resolve the issue — assuming your copy of Photoshop is the English version. If it is another language, you will need to contact Adove to get the proper language version.

Thanks for those suggestions. I checked that I had English set on the language toolbar. I do have Spanish and French as alternatives but I didn’t want to remove them as I use them regularly. I was a bit unsure about resetting my preferences – there was nothing under Type preferences which looked to be the likely culprit and I didn’t want to change anything else in case I inadvertently changed something which suited me.

In the end I did use system restore and it did the trick – it seems to be the modern equivalent of thumping the top of the TV 🙂

It sounds like your keyboard input got set to the AZERTY <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AZERTY> layout instead of the common QWERTY <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AZERTY> layout. (check the links)

How? I dunno. I don’t do Windows. And since I don’t know Windows guts, I don’t know how to tell you to fix it without doing the "TV Thump." But I’ve given you some clues…it might be a good idea for you to research this and find out how it works, and how to fix it without resorting to a system restore.

There is a key combination in Photoshop (and Indesign) that also switches the keyboard language. Happened to me frequently in the past but I can’t remember what it was. Alt + some other keys. Anyway just delete the shortcut for switching the keyboard language:

Control Panel > Regional settings > Languages > Details > Keyboard Settings (guessing here because I have a Dutch Windows) > in the next screen delete or modify the switching between languages
