I recently installed CS3 after using photo 4 elements for years, and i never had a problem letting my printer (Epson R320) handle the colors. I have searched the forum and found many places to go look and have even gone into Epson/printer/downloads, but I am VERY unsure which file i want to download in order to load the correct .icm(?) into CS3. or even any epson paper profiles. I usually just let the "geek" squad at CompUSA have at my computer, but i would like to do this myself (besides, they have left MI). Please please help!

Also, how come when I am working on a tiff (smart object usually on) most of the artistic tools are greyed out? I have opened jpegs and the tools are are black. why?

First question I’m going to let someone else handle, I can barely wrap my hands around the color set-ups for my own complexities let alone advise someone else.
But, as to the second about your greyed out tools, I’d hazard a guess that it’s the defined color space. A lot of "tools" and "filters" are dependent on the color space, ie only work in RGB. Go to your image mode and check the color space of one of the pegs that’s giving you the problem, if it’s space is something like INDEX, you’ve found your issue, change to RGB to work with filters, remember when working for process CMYK output final print to either CMYK preview your image, or work in CMYK space.

thank you, i will look into that. hopefully if that is my problem its not some "default" that i will have forever!

My image mode color space is set correctly to RGB. i played around a bit, and found that the filter tools gray out when i am working on 16-bit or 32-bit graphic. An 8-bit graphic allows me to become "Artistic". It doesn’t seem to be that way on the Mac at school, so there COULD still be some default setting that i have to discover and change (i use a PC), but i am happier now.

Sheryll,

Many of the filters only work in 8 bit mode. I’m pretty sure that applies to the Mac version as well.

As for the printer (paper) profiles, these are usually placed in the proper folder when you install the Epson driver. It’s a Windows/System folder, so they should be there even if you installed Photoshop after you installed the printer.

Of course, the Epson driver will only install profiles for Epson paper. If you are using 3rd party papers, the profiles are usually available from the paper manufacturer’s website.

Ian Lyon’s website has a number of useful tutorials on printing, color management, etc. His essay "Photoshop CS3 – Managing Colour When Printing" should provide a good walk-through on how to use profiles when letting Photoshop manage the color.
