Does anyone have a clue as to why Photoshop CS2 generates this error in Vista Ultimate?

"could not complete your request because there is not enough memory" RAM

I am using a dual-core 2.66 Ghz machine, 4 GB RAM, and working on a tiny 72 ppi image about 300 pixels.
It will not allow for another layer to be added, won’t allow the file to be saved as a PSD, really won’t do much of anything.

I have CS2 set to use 55% of RAM for Photoshop, have no other applications open at all with the exception of Winamp.

Thanks a ton!

Tim

Adobe has NEVER claimed Photoshop any version was compatible with Vista. For some people it works and for some it does NOT.

Now I haven’t got Vista and only by hearsay can tell that PS CS2 seems, to work with Vista, but …

Tim,

Do you get the error message when winamp isn’t running?
You could try and run Taskmanager at the same time as PS and see what your CPU/memory/page file readings are on the Performance tab. I read an article earlier this year regarding overheads in Vista when using MS Office, on the test machines Vista required 40% more memory than XP. No idea if the increase is linear in other apps but as you know, PS is a rather memory hungry prog.
The biggest problem with Vista seems to have been driver incompatabilities. I have tried it on two machines, wasn’t impressed, went back to XPPro (you can now buy Dell PCs with XP as an option)
Try doing a search of the Photoshop Windows forum at www.adobeforums.com for info re your problem.

What configuration is your memory, 4 x 1, 2 x 2? It’s all being seen by the system is it? Try taking a stick out, running PS and swapping them over and repeating.

Just a thought, you do have plenty of space on your scratch disc(s) don’t you? (no more than 85% of unfragmented disc space in use. Not quite the same as 15% free, the used space must be unfragmented)
Try deleting your prefs file as per Help as well, It’s amazing how many problems a dodgy one causes.

I really appreciate a few other people chiming in to help….

This answer
"Adobe has NEVER claimed Photoshop any version was compatible with Vista. For some people it works and for some it does NOT."

was unecessary, unhelpful, untrue, all the while littered with silly capital letters proporting its expertise.
Ugh.

Thankfully, the error happens very rarely, but happened about once every 2 or 3 months with XP Pro, and now
popped up with Vista Ultimate. Honestly I am surprised the CS2 apps work as well with Vista as they do. I say that
with admiration towards Adobe, sincerely.

TWK,
thank you immensely for the time you took for your answer, I mean that. This is a brand new machine, 4×1 RAM, gobs of disc space (only about 10% used)
I will keep in mind your suggestion of checking task manager if/when the error occurs again.

I will say this about Vista; there are days that I make it through without a hitch. Then there are days
that my entire day is spent dealing with errors, incompatibilities, bugs, glitches, etc. There is no question that Vista
should never have been released to the public. It has been out a year, and still is full of bugs and strange behavior.
And finally, just yesterday Logitech released Setpoint 4.2, after a full year of their mice drivers causing Vista to crash to
BSOD.

Downloading the latest patch for Adobe Update Manager helped as well. All in all, Vista has so much promise. But Microsoft forcing the general public to act as guinea pigs to this degree is unforgivable.

My compliments to Adobe for building CS2 long before Vista, and it still manages to function incredibly well in Vista.

Thanks for the update.

Adobe doesn’t "support" AMD processors either (last time I checked) but I have never owned a PC with an Intel on board in the 15 years I’ve owned a PC.
Never had any problems with them. As you say, some have no problem with Vista, others like yourself do. Considering the amount of permutations/variables in hardware and running softeware, it’s surprising it runs at all. Remember, new OS releases are not meant to improve the users’s experiences, it is just an excuse to get us to buy more hardware to run. (My next upgrade will be an Apple) The "Treadmill of Technology" you are forced to run faster and faster just to stand still (go backwards in some cases) Regards
