When using the crop tool (PS7) I set the crop size to 4 inches by 6 inches. However the tool is not constrained to 4 by 6 when I crop, it lets me drag beyond the 4 by 6 I entered.

I reset my preferences file using the Shift-ctrl-alt trick. But the tool still acts up. I have pressed clear to ensure any inadvertent tool settings are removed.

Anyone know what’s up with the tool? Can tool presets cause it to misbehave?

The crop tool works as it was programmed and as it is described in the help file. The values you enter in the status bar define the _target_ size of the cropped image. Therefore, only the proportions of the selected area are fixed, but not the size! By cropping, the size of the cropped image is set to the given values and the resolution adjusted accordingly. Just try it and check the image size after cropping. You will find it has exactly the values you entered beforehand. If you define a resolution of the target as well before cropping, the image will be resized and resampled to the desired values at the same time. If you simply want to cut out part of an image with defined size, you better use the rectangular marquee tool, which can be set to a fixed size of the _source_.

When you confirm the crop the result will be scaled to 4"x6". To do what you want, you can use the marquee tool with a style of "Fixed Size" and then Image menu->Crop.

Thanks Peter and Andrew.

It behaves as you described it would. I could have sworn it behaved differently before. Maybe my recollection is a crossover from the parallel universe we live in. Funny how the mind plays tricks on you. What a waste of time trying to solve a non-problem.
