Hey guys and girls at the adobe forums. I recently bought a copy of photoshop and I haven’t tried everything out yet. However I notice that the color that shows up on my monitor is not the color I get when I hit ‘save for web’. I figured I probably have to set the display mode in photoshop ( under "View>Proof setup> ) to Monitor RGB. Which I now have. But the problem remains. The only way to bypass it is by hitting ctrl+y/proof colors everytime I open up a new image.
This pretty much sums up my problems;

How do I make photoshop display the true colors and values from start?

color settings should be srgb, not monitor rgb.

you need to calibrate your monitor. which version of photoshop? what kind of monitor (crt or lcd?)

Thanks for the reply Dave but it didnt solve my problem, I tried switching to ‘working rgb’ under ‘View>proof setup>custom’ but I still get a darker image when I save it or hit ctrl+y. I also checked my monitors color match settings (color match: hp 9500) and picked the same color for proof condition in photoshop. Problem remains, I still get a darker kind of image when I save for web or hit ctrl+y.

The monitor is a CRT and my photoshop version is CS3.

Try to convert to sRGB before Save For Web. There’s also a preference in SFW to do this automatically.

cs3 makes it tougher because you don’t have a calibration util anymore. adobe gamma last shipped in cs2. you can google for free sw for monitor calibration or get some calibration hardware. that’s the starting point.
