Getting correct color

I have a picture of a classic Mustang. The car is original yellow. I wanted to Photoshop different colors onto the car just to see how it would look.

I made a selection of the car body and then pasted that into another layer.

I changed the foreground color to maroon tried the Color Replacement tool to paint the color onto the car body. But it paints a pinkish color (as opposed to the Honduras Maroon color). I am assuming this is because it is blending the two colors together.

I have tried changing the layer from Normal to all the other types (multiply, color, darken etc) and it still seems as if the color (on the color picker) does not actually get applied.

I tried Hue filter but really had no better luck than the Color Replacement method.

Is there something else I should do to get the true maroon color to shop up (and maintain the reflections)?

I also have been going to video tutorials (and will continue to do so trying to figure this out).

Thanks in advance,

PS, I can post the picture up on the web (pixentral?) if that would be of some assistance.

bzzt! not how i would go about it. i did hte same with my house when i was about to paint it. once you get the selection cleaned up and get it in its own layer, crtl-click the thumbnail to select all pixels, then add a hue/saturation adjustment layer and play with that. try all combinations, including checking and unchecking the colorize box.

Dave,
tried that and still can not get a good maroone color on the car. Did you actually accomplish this with the photo I put up on pixentral?

Don’t know about Dave, but that link didn’t work for me. I think you copied the wrong bit.

Try the method I recommended in another thread.

Select the target area and reduce its intensity with a levels adjustment layer. Then paint it with the brush in Color mode, or better, add a Solid Color adjustment layer and reduce the opacity and play with the blending mode.

By using adjustment layers you can go back and tweak things till you get what you are after.

Dave,
Thanks ever so much… at least now I know it can be done a lot better than me (but what is new).

did you do the Hue first then the color balance… I will have to play with that to figure it out. but at least, you did not wind up with pink (which in some areas would go over big). ha ha

John…. I really do not know why you can not get the picture (when Dave did)…….

did you do the Hue first then the color balance…

add the hue/sat, bright/contrast and color balance at the same time and tweak all together.

if you’re not sure about adjustment layers, check the manual, or/and get your selection, get it to a new layer, then run this action to load the 3 adjustment layers: <http://milbut.org/3%20Adjust%20Layers.atn>

then you can play around.

David,

Excellent! Absolutely excellent advise! Now, at least, I have in my growing arsenal of things in PS CS3 a way to change color.

I can only guess that it is experience that led you to use all 3 functions (Hue, Color Balance and Brightness) as I never would have thought to tie them together (especially the color balance).

I would imagine a knowledge of colors (ie., the color wheel) goes a good distance in helping.

anyway, thanks for the help.

Quick question.
When I make the various adjustments, I notice the whole picture (ie parking lot) is affected.

I am using the saved Selection (car body only) and that appears to be active (ie an eraser to check active) only erases the car body and not the parking lot.

And yet, when I apply the (for example) color balance, it affects the car body and parking lot.

Appreciate the advise.

sure. only way you can learn anything. i’m sure just playing around led me to try it.

nah. just curiosity. i’m an amateur and a hack. john, phos, chris, buko, len, bob and many others around here are the pros. i just listened to them over the years.

one thing i would look at adjusting if i was doing this for real, is the color of the reflection of the original car in the chrome (esp. in the front bumper!)

However, I loaded the car body only selection and then inversed it.

assuming you’re doing it without the action –

once you get the selection in it’s own layer (copy> paste) crtl-click the layer thumbnail – that selects only the pixels in that layer. then add the adjustment layer (hue/bright or color).
