The grey area outside the image in Photoshop 7 has turned itself to black. I checked the preferences and it’s set to grey. Does anybody know how to fix this.

Shannon, if it is the area immediately outside of your image when the image is in reduced magnification, just select a foreground color you want it to be, choose the paint bucket tool and Shift click with the paint bucket tool in that area.

It could be this?

at the bottem of the tools pallete, there are 3 squares (just above jump to image ready), the one on the right may be clicked, click the one on the left.

If T_DO’s suggestion—above—works, it’s likely you simply hit the "F" key on your keyboard by accident. Try it, and you’ll see that the "F" key will cycle your display through the 3 available modes…same as the ones accessed by using the Tool Bar buttons mentioned above.

If not, set your foreground color to R194, G194, B194, and Shift-Click in the gray area with your Paintbucket to return it to default.
