Elements 4 versus 5 help please

A few weeks after Elements 5 was issued, several postings to this newsgroup implied that the changes were minimal or cosmetic and that the UK upgrade cost was unjustified, so I stayed with version 4.

As I am about to start my daughter-in-law with version 5, I am wondering whether I should now upgrade, so that when she needs help, I am using the same version.

Can anyone say whether they think the upgrade is worth the UK cost of about 56 pounds? I suspect that, as usual, we in the UK are paying about twice the US price.

Thanks for any help.

I applied the same logic myself. One plus point in PSE 5 is the inclusion of curves but, I understand, it is a very limited implementation as compared with the free plug-in SmartCurve which I’ve be using happily for a year or more.

But Adobe have just recently invented another reason why you *really* want to upgrade – ACR 4.2 will not run on PSE 4. Apparently 4.2 offers improved processing but I’ve not read any comments yet as to how much better it is. Adobe say that ACR 3.7 is the most recent version that is compatible with PSE 4 but I’ve been using ACR 4.1 since it’s release without problems (that’s on XP, may be different on Vista). If you need to handle raw files from the most recent – and future – cameras then they’ve got you over a barrel unless you are comfortable with converting raw to dng before processing, but that doesn’t give the improved(?) processing.

As I am about to start my daughter-in-law with version 5, I am wondering whether I should now upgrade, so that when she needs help, I am using the same version.

Not having used it I can’t offer specific guidance on that one but I would imagine the bulk of PSE 4 would hold true in PSE 5. Someone else will have to fill in the gaps here.

I remain most resistant to the Adobe upgrade model, filling their coffers each year for minor tweaks is more than I can tolerate. If it were half that price I might consider it but in practice I’ll let two or more versions pass me by.

Thanks Chris,

Checking the differences between 5 & 6, the words faster and enhanced seem frequently to appear! More cash for Adobe, imperceptible benefit for the user?

Oh My Golly……Looks like the new Elements 6 has that silly "dark interface" that is on Lightroom. What is up with that? On Lightroom it is very hard for me to read the darn menus.

US upgrade price of $80 is too much for a program I have had less than a year. I’ll wait and see.
