An automatic update from Adobe failed on my computer this morning. Here’s the message I got:

—————————–
The update cannot be applied to the product. Please re-install the product and try again. Flash Lite 3 Update for Device Central CS3 failed to install. —————————–

In the CS3 family I only have Photoshop. I have the CS2 Suite and Lightroom 1.3.1 installed. Do I need to reinstall PS or LR to get the update?

What Dave said. The Adobe updater is broken – the best thing about it is that you can turn it off!

No, turning off the automatic updater is NOT A SOLUTION. It’s not even a decent kludge. The problem apparently resides in registry values for my computer. I found this message in a forum Adobe is running for Device Central:

Apprently a couple of registry keys have read-only permissions causing the update to fail – at least on my machine (XP Pro).

The offenders are HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DeviceCentral.advs and HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DeviceCentral.adpp and all of their respective subkeys and values. The System account has full access but my user/group (Administrators), for whatever reason, did not. I went in with regedit and changed the permissions to allow me full control, and the update finally suceeded. I could care less about the update it’s self, except now the stupid Adobe Updater will at least stop re-downloading the same patch over and over again.

Standard disclaimers apply, and YMMV.

I haven’t tried it yet. I am currently on hold for Adobe support, after getting some fairly lame advice about reinstalling the Flash Player and insisting on something more relevant. Nice fellow, but not very knowledgable.

Dave and John, I’m not sure we should be advising people to disable their Adobe Updater. I don’t mean you any harm personally, and I know your intentions are good, but the advice seems wrong to me.

I sure do wish Adobe would get better music for poor saps like me who have been on hold for twenty minutes. It’s awful!

edit: And, after all that time on hold, I get to talk to some fellow named Chris for about two minutes before we’re disconnected! Drat!

If the updater is broken (and that isn’t just a personal opinion) what’s wrong with advising people to turn it off when there’s a perfectly good alternative?

Because the updater itself is not broken, John, and because it updates more than just this one component. I had an update come down just a few days ago, along with the broken one, and it installed just as it should.

Automatic updates are a valuable service that we all use to keep the various applications we own current and running well. The alternative of remembering and applying updates manually is a very burdensome task. If possible, updates should be handled by the computer. It has a great memory and loves stupid jobs!

If the registry entries are the problem, perhaps someone at Adobe could change the installation error message. It would also be good to get this information into the hands of the support group. I had to describe this problem very carefully to three people before I was disconnected.

Here in this thread, and in the one for Device Central, Adobe has not confirmed the registry changes. That might be a good thing for them to do if it is the correct action.

edit: Gotta learn to spel.
