I have had Photoshop CS3 now for months without any issues and today it froze while int he middle of starting up. The splash screen reached the "Reading Preferences…" point and then simply sits at that point for much longer than usual. Trying to click only notifies me that Photoshop CS3 is "Not Responding". I haven’t made any changes, I haven’t EVER installed any plug-ins or 3rd party add-ons for Photoshop. The ONLY thing I can think of that has changed between todya and yesterday is the fact that I installed the Office 2003 Service Pack 3, so I could get my email working in Outlook 2003. I don’t see how that could have affected Photoshop CS3, but maybe it interefered somehow. Anyways, I have no idea what to do. Anyone have any ideas??

Thanks in advance!

Jeff,

Your preferences file is almost certainly defective. Reset the preferences (forum FAQ) and once your buckled up again, back up the file, so when it happens again, you can restore it.

Thanks Rob! That worked great!

So why does this happen? Why have I not had any issues up until now and then all of a sudden my preferences file is defective? I dont understand what causes it to become defective. And I sure hope this doesn’t happen again, anything I can do on my end to prevent it, other than simply backing up the file?

Thanks again!

Well, one thing can be shutting down the computer while PS is still on. That way PS doesn’t get to close that file properly.

It sometimes happened to me too. I had a power outage couple of months ago.

Have you heard about the Apache helicopter hitting a power line here in Holland yesterday?

At least 10,000 preference files hosed, I guess.

The pilots are safe, BTW.
