I’m experiencing the exact same issue on two computers in our office. Both running WinXP. I’ve tried reseting prefs (I get the confirmation dialog) and deleting prefs from C:\Documents and Settings\TWilson\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\Adobe Photoshop CS3 Settings. Also removed all new fonts installed by Adobe. I even added more memory because I thought that was slowing it down(2gb). Both computers are similar in build and installed programs. I’ve tried closing other applications as well but nothing helps. Sometimes it locks up when clicking on the text tool, and sometimes I can get as far as typing a few letters and it locks up.

Any new development on this issue from the original poster?

Just an update on other things I have tried.

Deleted ALL of the fonts in my fonts folder. (MS recreated 6 automatically and repopulated those) Deleted the Photoshop Prefs. Removed Photoshop. Restarted & Re-installed Photoshop from my desktop (copied contents to folder on desktop and installed as per FAQs suggestion). Set my default printer to MS Document because others have reported changing printer from network printer stops freezing issues. Had to run MS Office again, apparently it noticed fonts missing. Started Photoshop and it worked fine for a while. While using both Dreamweaver and Photoshop, Dreamweaver crashed and shortly afterward I experienced the same problem again with freeze-ups then the text tool locking it up.

My solution as of right now? Reinstalled CS2 and working like a charm. We plan to open a ticket w/ Adobe about the CS3 issue, when/if I get a resolution I will post here.

Deleted ALL of the fonts in my fonts folder.

that’s not a good thing. my guess is windows font system is somehow hosed.

I would believe that if it were just me… but this is happening on 2 computers in our office. We bought 3 licenses and installed on 2 machines, both experience the issue, plus original poster having the same problem. The only thing we have in common right now is WinXP and I’m sure not all WinXP users are having this problem. However, thanks for the suggestions.

well the other commonality is you. 🙂 if you’ve configured the 2 machines in your office, you may have done the same (problem?) thing to both. that one other poster has hit that same odd combination means we need to dig deeper to find out what it is.

good luck.

Had the same problem running on PS CS3, PS would just crash after selecting the Type tool, after awhile it got worse and i couldn’t even run PS. Reinstalled twice to no avail. The font preview thing worked for me as well though (:

Just a note for mac users u need to do the following:

Photoshop > Preferences > Type > Deselect ‘Font Preview Size’

Cheers guys!

I have 2600 fonts active because the work I do comes from many sources, wasting time turning off and on fonts isn’t an option.

2600 isn’t a problem, except loading and scrolling the font list. The problem is when you get one bad one, and have to find out what it is.

Don: True, but as I have said many times, you should put your fonts on a separate partition so there is no chance of a font becoming corrupted. It also decreases the font load time because you can defrag that partition once when the fonts are installed and it will not fragment after that.

I wasn’t talking about font corruption (that only happens on Macs, doesn’t it). I meant a font that was poorly constructed. Generally not a problem if you only use prof fonts, and not shareware.

Hiya, just want to say thanks-I had tried everything under the sun to fix this, albeit in Photoshop Elements 6, which came preinstalled on my Vaio and it was one heck of a hassle to reinstall it and it didn’t help at all…disabling font preview FIXED it. I have no idea which font could be broken as this comp only has Word and PSE that installed any fonts, contrary to my other comp with proper PS (7) and 2,000 fonts from various sources…

I have the same problem when using Photoshop CS4 64bit. Unchecking the ‘font preview size’ does work. I have no problems using the text tool in the 32bit version. Is this still a font problem?

Possibly, and Adobe would like to get a copy of the font causing the problem…

I’m also to the point where I can’t even run ANYTHING in PS3 because it starts up with the font too active, so when I even try to get OUT of the font tool, it freezes. I hope I can even make these suggested changes. Thanks, all.

Try resetting your preferences as described in the FAQ.

<http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.ef4a07f/1>

You either have to physically delete (or rename) the preference files or, if using the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift method, be sure that you get a confirmation dialog.

This resets all settings in Photoshop to factory defaults.

hello everyone

im actually using photoshop cs4 and encountered the same problem, but i found a solution. it was a font, in my case, the "Gas" font. i had to uninstall them all and install them in groups to narrow it down, until finally i had it down to 6 fonts and just went one by one. im sure there are other fonts out there that are either unsupported or corrupt, so check those fonts. im sure this applies to cs3 as well, although i didnt encounter the same problem in cs3.

Hello all,

I’m using Photoshop Elements 6 on a Mac (OS 10.5) and had the same problem. Thanks to your suggestions about it being a font problem, I used Apple’s Font Book application to validate all my fonts. I found many duplicates, which I deleted, and one font that had some kind of system error, likewise deleted. Everything is peachy now. Thanks.

Wrong application and wrong OS for this forum.

Glad you got it fixed though. 🙂

Even though it was wrong forum, the solution also applies to Photoshop itself on Windows.

It is nice to see that our advice to search out bad fonts is validated by these recent users. Too bad there wasn’t a Font Shop for Windows that could validate fonts without having to go through them one at a time.

I have a rudimentary Font manager (Bitstream Font Navigator) that does all I want although it doesn’t find bad fonts.

I think Linotype FontExplorer® X is good but it’s not released for Windows yet. There is also CFONT PRO.

Example :
———— using PTBSync *** atomic desktop clock (ElmüSoft) Photoshop CS3 crash by using text tool due to PTB_CLK2.TTF font in C:\WINDOWS\Fonts
————
Fix :
————
Delete PTBSync application then PTB_CLK2.TTF font (with windows font manager) ————

* **PTBSync is a multifunction-application from ElmüSoft for the Windows desktop.

This is not a bug in PTBSync.
This is a bug in Adobe Photoshop.

If you open the font PTB_Clk2.tff in ANY Font editing program like for example "Font Creator 5.0" you will see that this font shows completely perfectly.
Also you can use this font in Word, Internet Explorer or ANY other program. Only Photoshop has a problem.
How is it possible that all these programs work fine and only one program crashes ?
Because the font is bad ?
Or because Photosho has a bug ?
What is more probable ?

I can assure you one thing after 25 years of programming experience: "The program which crashes is ALWAYS the program which has the bug !" Yes it is that easy!
Hello,
If Photosop would not have a bug and the font would have a problem, then Photoshop would behave like this:
It would tell you in a error message box: "The font PTB_Clk2.tff is defect. It cannot be loaded"

A sane program behaves like that: It shoes an error message if something is wrong.
An ill program behaves like that : It crashes.

Write to the support of Adobe and ask them to fix this bug !

pom, have you sent a copy of the font to chris cox? i’m sure he’d be interested to see if there’s anything funky going on with it and the way photoshop handles it.

(as suggested here: Chris Cox, "Crash when using text tool." #42, 4 Nov 2008 4:41 pm </webx?14/41> )

be sure to link back to this thread and to give any explanation you think chris might find useful.

I run CS4 64bit and can confirm that, by disabling preview option, PS stopped freezing and crushing.

Thank You, good people!

Yeah, I got the same problem in CS3. It kept shutting down after a few seconds if I tried to use a text tool (or even when I opened a document with text layer). It was driving me really mad cause this is the only program I’ve ever bought (I use freeware for everything else but we all know there’s no freeware match for Photoshop) and it wasn’t really cheap for me… I reainstalled it, tried to move incomplete fonts, tried everything and nothing worked. Then in the last desperate attempt to fix the problem I disabled all the options in the Type tab and it works! The problem really is in the Font preview option. Disable it and you’re fine. By the way I recommend Free&Easy Font Viewer to compensate for the preview option. It’s very simple program but it does what you expect it to do. Have a nice day.

If you have Gas or Guitar font installed on your 64bit machine, Photoshop crashes. Photoshop 11.0.1 pathcer will solve this problem.

For CS3, please uninstall those fonts.
Thanks.
