Hi,

I’ve created a 100×100 square with a 1px black line on a white background in Photoshop 7. When I rotate the square 5 degrees, the sides of the square are anti-aliased but still look really jagged. Is there any way to smooth these lines (while still keeping them moderately sharp)?

Thanks in advance!

Do they look jagged on your screen or when printed? What resolution are you using?

You are looking at them at 100% enlargement, right? Jaggies will always (nearly) appear when you look at an enlarged image. 100×100 is only 1/3 inch at 300 dpi, so I am suspecting you are enlarging the shape, then evaluating it.

Cheesefood — I’m working on a web page, so screen’s all that matters. I’m using 72dpi.

Don McCahill — Yes, I’m looking at them at 100%.

Thanks!

Are you sure it’s not a limitation of your monitor? I don’t mean to insult you, and if you have a butt-kicking graphics system please don’t take this adversely.

If you’re creating an image in 72 dpi, it’s going to appear jaggy. A box that size and with that thin of a line would be hard to notice. What’s your screen-size at? 800×600 or 1024×768?

Cheesefood – I’m on a pretty high-end Dell workstation using a Trinitron CRT at 1280×1024.

To reproduce what I’m seeing:

1) Create a 200×200 RGB image in Photoshop at 72dpi with a white background.
2) Create a new layer and select that layer.
3) Using the Marquee Tool, create a selection of 100×100.
4) Use Edit/Stroke to create a 1px black (#000000) line where the selection currently is.
5) Ctrl-D to de-select
6) Use Edit/Transform/Rotate and specify an angle of 5 degrees and click on the check mark.

Note that if I use a gray (like #666666) instead of black, the jaggedness is much less.
