I just got a new computer and I am trying to use photoshop 5.0 le on it (vista os) and everytime I try to use the photoshop, I am asked which plug in I want to use. I have no idea what a plug in is or means. So, I close it and photoshop trys to bring itself up, then shuts down. I tried to download a 5.0.1 patch (?), but cannot install it without the original software disc. So, I called tech support who told me they can only give phone support to versions 9 and 10 customers….Grrr; then they reffered me here. So I am hoping someone here can please help me! Thanks!

This is the Photoshop Forum. I don’t know if there’s an LE Forum any more. because Photoshop LE is a few years obsolete. I’m surprised you could install it in Vista at all.

I’d go for something more up-to-date.

How did you install it without the disk?

My dad copied the software from my old computer to a cd, then I was able to put in the disc and use the program from the disc. I don’t know if I could install it, but I was able to test the cd out and use it on my dad’s computer. I have not attempted to install it. However, as for going with something more up to date, I can’t afford it, and this has worked fine for the simple edits I use it for. 🙂 But if you could solve my problem I would really appreciate it.

I also did not see a le forum. And I think my problem stems from the vista os, but I am not even sure if the 5.0.1 patch is what I need. If someone knows why I am being prompted for a plug in I would appreciate knowing what this means and what to do. Thakns!

Isn’t it $100-200? I can’t afford that right now, and as I stated above this has worked fine for me up until I got the new computer, so I don’t really see any reason to spend more money on something I have been happy with. I just want to figure out how to get it to work on my new computer. Is that bad?? I registered the one I have?? :/

Can you cut and paste, blur, and erase layers on that program?

You can’t just upgrade to the latest operating system in a vacuum. That said, give the gimp a try.

The Gimp will do all that and more. It’s very nice. And teh price (free) is right.

LE is a really old program – I bought a copy of it around 1999, that’s how old it is. I think it was designed to run on Windows 9x, so would definitely have problems with Vista.

If you can’t afford Elements, you might want to run your computer on Linux (a Unix lookalike operating system), then you can use the GIMP (Gnu Image Manipulation Program)which is actually included in a lot of Linux distros, including Ubuntu, Fedora, etc. Be aware that Linux involves a completely different way of running your computer than Windows and the learning curve can be a bit steep at first. Ubuntu is designed to be very easy to install and use. I use two Linux distros myself: Fedora and Debian (which Unbuntu is based on). You can buy complete Linux sets for about $5.99 (that’s right!) at places like osdisc.com or cheapbytes.com, but be warned, all you get is the disc, no manuals or anything. There are online forums and usenet groups where you can get help, and google is your friend. The web sites for various Linux distros usually have a documentation section with some basic installation and setup instructions.

Elements can be had for about $75.

Although the Gimp is free — and I have never used it — the frustration you may experience using it may cost far more than $75. (Does it not have a byzantine interface that would frighten even a hardened Photoshop nerd?)

Wolf,

No, the Gimp interface is not so different from Photoshop’s, yet not similar enough to be a plagiarism. I have used it in the past and had no trouble getting around in it.

i’ve been using it for about a month now. it was a little frustrating the 1st day, but now it’s just like any of a dozen other imaging apps i’ve used, albeit more powerful than any except photoshop.

download it and find out. better yet, download (google for:) "gimpshop". it’s a gimp port that’s specifially skinned to be more familiar to photoshop users. still free.
