I am using cs3 with camera raw 4.3.1 When I use the command (open as) and select raw to open a jpg file a dialog box appears stating: Photoshop Raw Options:
Dimension
Width _____ Pixels
Height______Pixels

Channel
count #
Depth Byte order
eight bit
sixteen bit
Header
size #####

What gives? If I open the image after setting the dimensions, the file will open as a JUNK gray scale file!
Any help will be greatly appreciated…. Thanks in advance

I don’t know how you are doing that, "open as" relies on either an executable or a dll as in windows Picture and Fax Viewer to work, the Camera Raw folder contains neither.
In any case, Raw is for processing…. Raw files, not jpgs. Raw files (electronic format as NEF for Nikon) is just the Raw data that is supplied to the camera’s sensor before any in camera manipulation is carried out on it. Any colour information that the data (it is essentially greyscale) contains is either processed by the camera’s sensor before conversion to JPG or via the Raw converter in PS.
What camera are you using?
Does it produce "RAW" files?
What happens when you try to open *EF files?

Bad day yesterday, I took "open as" to mean "open with" I’ve tried to do what you have done and it works fine, I can open a jpg as I would open a raw file in camera raw.
I still do not see the advantage of opening a jpg in CR though, the file has all ready been "worked on" by the camera, in my case losing up to 60% of the original data.

Thanks for the reply. I figured out the problem! I was using the comand open as (photoshop raw) instead of the comamd open as (camara raw)! I am using a Nikon D40 just changed over to digital recently. Again thanks

I have a D50, not a D40 as previously stated. Yes I changed the settings to NEF + JPEG. Never played with a raw file before! But I am beginning to appreciate it! I stopped using the AUTO white balance. Did not understand why the pictures were having a colored tint.

The WB selection will not have any effect when using RAW files, all adjustments are (can be) made after the photo is taken.
The WB in Camara Raw will be set to "as shot" allowing you to keep that setting if OK.
