Spot colors can be outside of just about any color space. But, what I’ve seen is that AI and PS don’t always play well together in the first place. Colors in one often don’t display or print the same in the other. So the colors could be OOG, or it could be PS and AI miscommunicating.

RGB space is larger than CMYK. But, there are coordinates that CMYK can reproduce that RGB cannot (and vice-versa). So, the spot color might actually be outside of both color spaces, giving you a triple-whammy of color conversion woes.

Your only solution (and it’s not a good one) is to convert the CMYK file to your target RGB color space for web and then edit your file to color-correct. If possible you should do this in AI – it will be a lot faster and less painful than trying to edit the colors in PS.
