I am a web designer, and have a large set of clients’ logos to convert , they are typically .gif or .jpg on a white surround/background, … and I have to convert them to be on a black background.

I have photoshop 6.0.

I have tried converting the mode to RGB,
then image>adjust>invert,
then image>adjust>channel_mixer (& manually change each color channel to its opposite on the spectum)

It works on some OK, but is inconsistant.

Is there a better way?
Is there a better way in a different/more recent product?

I also have to do some photo’s (rather than logos), what’s the best method to isolate the background & avoid a halo effect.
Thanks

Hi B4rry,
– Click on the white background with the Magic Wand
– Tap [Ctrl+I] to convert background color

Your FIRST duty in a job like this is to do everything in your power to get your hands on copies of the original logo files. If there’s any justice, those files will be in Illustrator or some other compatible vector format. That way, you can put them on any color background you like and you’ll never have to worry about eliminating any fringing colors.

If that’s proving to be impossible in some or all cases, then you need to look at the following thread and add a new tool to your arsenal:

There are other ways to drop out white backgrounds, but the plugins can often make short work of a tedious process.

Thanks Phos for you excellent and fast response, much appreciated.

I will try harder to get vector versions, but for those I can’t…

I downloaded the software, installed it in Photoshop OK. I was a bit confused by their statement that "…It requires the use of "layers" so remember the effect must be applied to an image that is on a layer above the background in order for it to work."

So eventually, I put an example .gif over a black layer, and indeed it did work (a bit), but I don’t know how good the results can/should be.

Is there a chance you/someone could convert this one for me: <http://www.bp.com/images/bp-logo.gif>
(so that the white surround, turns to black)
When I tried it – on one setting I still got the white halo, and on the next (only slightly different) all but the outer green was removed.

Here’s another resource for you. You may be able to find the vector version (the sites have ONLY vector logos) of some of the logos you need.
<http://web.brandsoftheworld.com/> (This site has the BP logo) <http://www.allfreelogo.com/>

BUT! BE VERY CAREFUL AND INSPECT THEM CLOSELY! Not all of them come from "offical" sources, and may have been traced or recreated by some anonymous graphic artist. Many are perfect, some are pretty close, and some are just plain awful.

If you go to <http://vectormagic.stanford.edu>, you can upload even crappy resolution gifs and, with a bit of work, get pretty good vector graphic results. Your icon-sized BP logo, with some manual retouching, yielded fairly good vector results. Placing in PS at a much larger size than the original, rasterizing, and using the magic wand (antialias, tolerance 10) to select the white background and filling with black gave this:
< http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1miUTCSv0ao0Tvcca6 VCtF9N10U8u> Obviously, a bit more cleanup is needed. In fact, with a logo as simple as this, it wouldn’t take too much effort to recreate it, or you can leech it from one of the sites Phos mentioned. Of course, all this assumes that you have the right to use the logo in the first place, in which case you should be able to get the logo from the company’s art department. Or just go to the BP website to get it — googling bp logo got me to this page < http://www.bp.com/sectiongenericarticle.do?categoryId=900482 2&contentId=7008815> with links to the master vector files.
