Hi. I’ve got a PNG-24 image with alpha transparency that will be used on a web page. I’d like to get the size down to something manageable (under 70kb). It’s right now 250kb. I’ve used some of the utilities (PNGCrush, etc.) that compress PNG files and have had small benefits from them. Any ideas would be appreciated.

You could try reducing the number of colors, using for example pngquant. This will probably deteriorate the image quality somewhat.

Given you are already compressing the file there isn’t a real way to do this other than reduce the size of the image.

Thanks, Brett. That’s what I was afraid of. I’m working on using something different than PNG; Internet Explorer 6.0 doesn’t handle those images well anyway (if they have alpha transparency). The image was perfect in Firefox 2 but wasn’t worth the trouble to get it working in IE.
