In Photoshop 7, I don’t see a .gif extension. Are jpeg and gif the same thing?

No.

I can’t remember how gif worked with PS 7 I think it was an extra extension in the goodies folder on the install CD

GIF files are indexed RGB. If your image is 24-bit RGB or 32-bit CMYK you cannot save as GIF, but you can always Save For Web.

I need to have the image saved so that it can be transparent on a webpage, how would I go about doing that? How do I know if the image is 24-bit RGB or 32-bit CMTK?
