In my work, if the pictures are going to be printed, I save the final file as an EPS file so that my RIP will take the file and print it to my 7600.

I’ve just been reading about saving EPS files in the CS2 User Manual (although I actually use CS3) and I’m uncertain now of my saving settings.

I always thought that the settings in the Encoding section only affected the preview image, not the whole file, but the manual does not make this clear. I usually choose JPG (Medium Quality) over ASCII as it saves a smaller file, but is this at the expense of final printed quality or just the preview?

EPS is an old and tired format, a hold over from last century.

Tiffs would be a much better choice.

Choosing Jpg is destroying the actual file.

If I were to send a TIF file to the RIP, the RIP first converts it to EPS internally, then RIPs it and then prints it. If I send it an EPS file, it just RIPs and prints. I prefer to have control over the image until the very last minute, so all that the RIP is doing is printing, no conversions that I can’t see are happening, and as much as possible is being done in Photoshop where I have control.

Thanks for the info on the JPG setting, I’ll do some tests to see if I can tell the difference between the various ASCII settings.

First I’ve heard of a RIP that does a Raster-to-EPS-to-Raster conversion. The data sent to the printer is raster, so it doesn’t really make sense to convert raster to vector first. Are you sure the RIP converts raster to vector before converting to raster for printing?
