I’m looking to purchase photoshop and I’ve been told by some that elements might do for what I have in mind. I’m looking to change the backgrounds, add unique text, create whole new artworks from scratch, and manipulate photographs of some of my artwork. Would elements fit the bill? Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

You could download and test the trial software for yourself and decide if Elements will suit your needs.

For removing backgrounds, Photoshop is what you need. Lots of tools that enable you to erase almost any background and then composite images flawlessly. PS is also the best for editing and color-correcting images.

If you want to paint ("create whole new artworks from scratch") then you want an additional program named Painter. A fine addition to your production arsenal.

Sid lists an ideal toolset if you have the money to blow but it is not necessary. Elements can also remove backgrounds. Those who are understandably confused about the differences of Photoshop versions are likely suited for the cheaper versions. You do not need the full version of Photoshop to achieve your goal.

You might look to GIMP, a free image editor that may give you more features than Photoshop Elements.
