Hi, all.

I have Vista and Adobe Photoshop configured to open picture files. I am trying to open several files (jpg) at the same time, selecting them and using the File-Open option. Problem is, that option now only works with up to 15 files; it disappears with 16 or more. Same with the "Open With" option. This was not a problem with XP. Does anyone know if there is a setting to change this limit? IS it a Vista issue or something with Photoshop?

Thanks in advance for any help.

What do you mean by dissapear? That they vanish from the File>Open dialogue box or they just stop opening/loading after 15 images?
Could be a memory thing. Just because you had enough to do this in XP, doesn’t mean you will have enough to do it in Vista, it needs more RAM just to run.
What size are your JPGs and do you hit the limit irrespective of the file size?

Sorry, I did not explain it correctly.

My starting point is not Photoshop: I am in Windows Explorer. If I select 15 files and right-click, "Open" is the first option in my context menu, and I also have "Open With" down the menu, listing several programs (paint, picture manager, etc.). If I select 16 files, neither option is listed.

Never seen that behaviour, (I don’t use Vista, happily) what happens if you only select one image?
If you can select one in Vista and "open" and "open with" is available, it may know it cannot open multiple files, so the applications to do so are not available
You cannot open multiple files in PS from the file>Open dialogue box in Windows Explorer. (WXPPro) .
To open multiple files you need to open them from within the File>Open dialogue box in Photoshop.

Thanks for your help. The strange thing is, the "open" and "open with" menus are available if I select between 1 and 15 files, and disappear for 16 or more files. Welcome to Vista!!!!!. My guess is, there is some Vista registry setting somewhere.

Yes, you can open multiple files in PS from Windows Explorer in XPPro: Select several files, right click and you will see the open menu. (assuming that you have PS set as your default program for jpgs, in this case).

I just checked that this is not limited to photoshop: the same thing happens with text files and notepad: It will only show the open menu with up to 15 files.

I have never been able to do this from WE, it just opens the first one in the selection. I would like to hear from anyone else out there who can do this.
Same applies to Word documents and spreadsheets.
It sounds like something that Vista may do, when it comes time to ditch XP I will be buying a MAC, I wouldn’t touch Vista with a bargepole.

I’m using XP – also unable to open multiple files through explorer. The options are listed .."open" and "open with" but when selected and using open with Photoshop CS2 – only one file opens.

If I click "Open" in the first case, it opens all 15 pictures in Photoshop. There is no "Open" option in the second case; the only difference is that there are 16 files selected.

I can do that, what I cannot get is them to multiple open in Photoshop from Windows Explorer.
I can drag multiple files into PS from WE and open them. If I want to multiple open files I open them from within Photoshop.

What we’ve got here is a failure to communicate…

This screen is Explorer. What happens if you select several files, right click and click open? In my case it launches photoshop (if it is not open already) and opens the selected files. Do you get a different result?

This, for me, is opening multiple files in Photoshop from WE. I am not sure if you are referring to something different.

One last try for you: add PS to your "send to" context menu in WE, see if you can do it for several files.
