I have been working on an image for a few hours and was about to save it but when I click file>save or file>save as… nothing happens. I don’t want to turn of my computer until I can save this image or else all my work is gone.
What can I do to save this image? I also tried the ctr+s and ctr+shift+s but nothing happens nothing at all.

Thanks

J

Is PS waiting for you to do something like finish a crop or other operation?

No, it’s not doing anything at all.

Is this something that has just started happening?
Have you tried to save in different formats?
When you try and close PS are you asked if you want to save your work? Have you tried deleting your preferences? It will mean you having to exit PS though.
To reset, start PS with shift+alt+ctrl keys held down.
It’s a timing thing, if you get it right you wil asked if you want to delete the file, you do, a new one is created at startup.

Also, If you still have PS running, hit ctrl+alt+delete to start Task Manager. Check the Applications tab tosee if PS has stopped responding. TWK

I had this very same issue and called Adobe. Sad news. Your problem is caused by a corruption in your preferences file. The poster further down this line gave you the only remedy I can think of. Restart and delete all preferences. I wish I knew a better solution.

All I get when I try this is "Scratch disk preferences". Is there a way around it?
Can’t I dump the preferences without this operation?

The file can be found in C:\Documents and Settings\"username"\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\Adobe Photoshop CS3 Settings\Adobe PS CS? prefs.psp.
If you use this method, don’t delete the file, just move it to another folder or rename it (change the extension, this will have the same effect) Then at least you will be able to put back/rename it again if you have to. . If this doesn’t solve your problem, you can try doing the same with each of the psp files in turn until PS works as it should.

It seems to work just fine now.
At least I can save things again.
And I noticed the Adobe Photoshop compatibility screen comes up when I save. I’m changing that back to always hoping that particular preference setting wasn’t the cause of this whole thing.
Too bad I lost my photo, or it went back to the way it was before I started. It was starting to look good.

Jay,

We have all been there ;(
Compatability is in Preferences, ctrl + K under File Handling. If you are unlikley to ever use earlier versions of PS, switch it off (set it to never) This also makes for smaller file sizes. If the problem resurfaces you have your reason for the earlier troubles.
You cannot plan for a corrupt preferences file, or even know what corrupts it, but you could save your image more regularly, that way you would discover the problem earlier.
Put those instructions away for a rainy day and when strange things start to happen again, you will know what to do. It’s amazing the different problems those files can cause when they have a sulk on.
Stay safe.
