Does anyone know of a good, easy to follow article that explains how to add clouds to a blah image in Windows CS3?

What is an ‘image’? A photograph? A painting? A drawing?

Copy clouds from another image. Grab as many as you want from here: <http://www.sxc.hu>

I want to add clouds to a photograph that has no sky detail.

Images from contributors on sxc.hu used to be mostly free.

They aren’t anymore…well, at least the good, hi-rez ones, anyway.

Actually I have some clouds that will work. I found an article by Mark Galer called Photoshop Masking and Montage tutorial on Photoshopsupport.com that explains what to do. However, I’ve followed his steps to the letter, but when it comes time to paste the clouds over the photograph the correct command [PASTE INTO] is grayed out and I can’t figure out why.

re: SXC.hu… You can use the advanced search on SXC.hu to weed out the photos that have usage strings attached. You can also get good images from morguefile.com

I’m not familiar with Mark Galer’s article but you can Google ‘layer mask’ to find a wealth of tutorials. Just select all from a cloudy photo, copy, switch to your clear sky image, paste, apply layer mask and paint away.

"Paste Into" only works if you have an active selection in the target image.

John,

How does one make sure a selection is active and do you mean the sky selected by using the magic wand? The tutorial I’m trying to folow is a text description not a movie at < Http://photoshopsupport.com/tutorials/masking-and-montage/ph otoshop-masks.html>

The section is active if you can see the "marching ants" (if they haven’t been hidden with Ctrl+H) and the background layer is selected.

I understand, but according to the tutorial that isn’t the point where I use "PASTE INTO" for copying the clouds to my image. As I said it worked once and when I used PASTE INTO the clouds came in behind the photograph so all I had to do was stretch out the clouds to fill the old dull sky and adjust the cloud brightness to make it look realistic. It was very simple and looked great. I guess it was a one time occurrence!

just use paste instead of paste into.

PASTE doesn’t work. It puts the clouds over everything. Only PASTW INTO will put the clouds behind the buildings, etc.

‘Paste’ does work. You just need to apply the mask after you paste.

‘Paste Into’ is an old command that I think dates back to prior to Photoshop 3 in the mid 1990s, when layers first made their appearance. These days, we don’t need to think so far ahead to make a selection to ‘paste into’.
