Out of nowhere my CS3 extended version will lock if I try to open a file. The file open dialog will flash on the screen then disappear. The menu bar will usually gray out and clicking on any option gets me a ding but that’s all.

I must use the task manager to close the program. When task manager opens it does not say not responding… it says running.

I have reset the preferences… I have tried to use a old restore point but the procedure fails… I think because I recently install a windows vista auto update that cannot be uninstalled.

My version is 10.0.1 but I tried downloading a reinstalling the lastest up date but it made no difference.

If I open a raw file then take it to CS3 I can work on it and save it but cannot open any other files… It seems the trouble is confined to the open… open as dialogs. Seems to go into a loop of some kind.

I am using Vista… with 4 gig of memory.

This happens if the dialog has got off the screen somehow. Try resetting your preferences.

Thanks John… that is the first thing I tried.. did not work. The dialog box does flash in the correct location but then disappears.

I do hate to post this update…it just shows what an idiot I am BUT…

Let me explain the weird behavior one more time.

When I clicked on “Open” or “Open as” the dialog would either not appear or flash and disappear. The Main Menu would gray out and clicking on it resulted in a ding or no response at all.

I have spent almost three days trying to solve the problem… including a reinstall… in which I managed to loose my actions.

NOTHING worked. I could not close except with the task manager. In the task manager it stated Photoshop was running not “ Not responding” very confusing.

OK… today out of frustration I hit “Escape”!!!! Guess what… the menu came back and the next time I hit open it opened correctly.
