I’m having some upgrades done for my computer. Currently have AMD 4200+ dual core, 250 hdd, 4g ram loaded (but CS3 only sees 1.6 g available, hence the upgrade), ASUS mb.
Upping to 64 bit XP Pro, and updating the motherboard, so CS3 can utilize more ram, as well as adding more and faster ram chips. Also adding a 500 g internal hdd.
Question is: should I keep the original 250 g hdd as primary and use the 500 for storage and scratch? Or move the system to the new 500 g and use the 250 for scratch? (I also have 2 external 250 g hdd’s for additional back-up storage.)

This is all in hopes of improving CS3’s speed and efficiency; occasionally experience a "not enough memory" situation, and it can bog down on some applications, as you all know.

I’d really appreciate any advice on this. I’m having to rely on another’s help, and I want to be sure this will work!! Or, have I totally lost it!!:)

Thanks,

Barry

adding the /3GB switch to the boot.ini file will allow xp to see 3 gig. i believe that’s the most ps (a 32 bit app) can use.

First advice if you going with 64 bit is to move to Vista. And if you’re going to go that route, up the RAM to 8 gigs and make sure to have the scratch as its own drive.

You might want to check out this thread and pay particular attention to post 5.

XP pro sees the 3 g, no problem with XP ….CS3 only sees 1.6 g!! Asus mb’s need the upgrade, from what I’ve read, for CS3 to get more available ram. And the 64 bit XP should be able to go even beyond 4 g, if I want to later. What about the hdd question?

Thanks for that link, Robert.
I’ve been advised to stay away from Vista for the time being, one former Microsoft employee said to wait at least until Service Pack 3 has been released!!

To quote another poster here…..I hate computers!!

one former Microsoft employee

Why is he a FORMER employee?

I wouldn’t advise putting Vista on an already running XP machine just for the sake of it, but if you’re going 64 bit it’s really the only way to go.

"if you’re going 64 bit it’s really the only way
to go."

Could you share, in layman’s terms, why?
That is contrary to what I’ve been told by a number of people, including the Microsoft ex!

For starters, Adobe won’t support it. They have stated for the record that the apps will run on Vista 64.

Secondly, finding drivers for XP 64 can be quite an exercise in futility. Vista 64 drivers are far easier to come by and are being added all the time.

See this Q&A:

Do Adobe Creative Suite 3 applications run on 64-bit versions of Windows Vista?
While Adobe Creative Suite 3 software is natively 32 bit, these applications will run on 64-bit versions of Windows Vista. For an in-depth overview of 64-bit computing and its value, see this blog from Scott Byer, Adobe Photoshop software architect.

Ultimately the decision is yours. Most of the Vista naysayers are those who’ve never used it and are simply going by "what they’ve heard."

And those that have used it, installed it on underpowered machines. Just as XP shouldn’t have been installed on Win 98 machines, Vista shouldn’t be installed on XP machines.

That’s my $0.02 worth. Dave will be along soon to rebut every word. <g>

sigh. whatever.

.CS3 only sees 1.6 g!!

users here have reported 2.7gb available with straight xp pro. do you NEED 64 bit?

the MAIN reason i have for not recommending vista right now is that microsoft has already announced windows 7 for 2009.
