Grrr…Just found this topic in my search on how to create image maps in CS3 the way I used to.

My advice would be track down a copy of CS2 to use. The image map tool in Image Ready let you create image maps based on layers and in mapping work this saved a lot of time—you can set the roughness or some such setting to simplify them.

Hi. Thanks for the response. I ended up using Fireworks CS3, which has a tool for creating image maps from layers. It was a very handy tool — and extremely accurate. The image maps exactly match each county; nothing done by hand could have created anything this precise.

But take a look at the definition of the hotspots in the HTML code. It is possible that you have a massive definition that will chew up some considerable bandwidth to transmit. (The point ID and others were making.)

This isn’t a problem if all your users are on high speed connections, but if a significant number are on dialup, they might not want to wait for such precision.

You’re right; I noticed that when implementing the image maps in ASP.NET. But the time it would have taken to even draw simple rectangles over the counties was not available for the deadline given. As a development team of one on this project, a compromise had to be reached. At some point in the future, if my boss wants, she can have someone (other than me) go in and draw the rectangles for a smaller file size.

Suffice it to say that if you had done it by hand instead of spending time here, you would have been done with it in the first place.

Yeah, but where’s the fun in that? R&D is half the fun 🙂

I usually do R&D while getting the job done. It is the process that gives up the better solution.

Here’s a new twist –

Has anyone tried to open or import a file from Imageready CS2 that already has some hotspots drawn into Fireworks CS3? Despite claims that Fireworks now reads most of the .psd informatiom, the hotspots do not appear in FW (I would expect them to be in the web layer?).

Has anyone tried this or found a solution?
