Service Pack 1 for Vista is available. I just installed it. Other than it reset the native resolution on my main monitor, it went without a hitch.

Recently, it seems, that Vista has been lamb-basted (what does that actually mean) as a nasty OS. It is not, I have been using Vista Ultimate 32/64 without incident. SP1 is no larger than SP1 for XP (in ratio to installation size).

Any one who says that you should choose XP over Vista for a new computer installation is nuts.

Vista is a fine OS, having used it for the last 10 months I can confirm that is rock stable. I now use the 64 bit version exclusively, it has matured very quickly and is a great way to run a system. JMNSHO.

ahem! not lambasted, just pointed out that it has obvious deficiencies as compared to xp sp2 (and even more when compared to the any-day-now-sp3!)

from today’s headlines:
Vista SP1 vs. XP SP2 – Benchmarked
<http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=1332>

Looking at the data thereΒ’s only one conclusion that can be drawn – Windows XP SP2 is faster than Windows Vista SP1. End of story. Out of the fifteen tests carried out, XP SP2 beat Vista SP1 in eleven, Vista SP1 beat XP SP2 in two of the tests, and two of the tests resulted in a draw.

however, there’s good news for users of vista 64 bit as you and bob are using… (and tied back to the previous articles on the benchmarking)

Making the case for 64-bit Windows Vista
<http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=1352>

To me, the benefits of Vista are clear – forget about 32-bit (if you can), make the leap to 64-bit and buy as much RAM as you can afford (of that your system can take).

Any one who says that you should choose XP over Vista for a new computer installation is nuts.

oh, i’m detecting nuttiness all right! XD

Seconded…very strongly. That’s without SP1. Gotta get around to that one of these days.

So much of the stuff floating around is written by people that tried it as an upgrade or loaded it on an under powered machine.

With the right hardware, it’s just fine.

I’m 55 not 64 (just to set the record straight).

Just a quote from the article: "IΒ’d tried to take the 64-bit route with XP a number of times but each time I hit a wall that I couldnΒ’t overcome. Trying to get XP 64-bit running was a painful experience,"

So it would seem that Vista was an improvement for the 64 bit version.

Yep, you’re right (just to set the record straight). I just booted up my XP machine (the one with the wonky Intel board) and I did see a slight performance improvement, but I am not phoning my mom about it.

I was running a dual-boot and did not have any problems with 32bit, speed or otherwise. I was just making sure that the 64bit would ‘drive’ without any problems.

I am very happy at this point.

CS3 runs ok on Vista 64? I also noted that upping the RAM from 4 to8 G gave a marginal increase in performance. I would suspect that it would be more noticeable with CS3 and a large filter demand. Any feedback there?

Microsoft Pulls Vista SP1 Update
<http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/02/21/1526225>

"news.com reports that Microsoft is withdrawing SP1 for Vista. Nick White, Microsoft product manager blogged ‘We’ve heard a few reports about problems customers may be experiencing as a result of KB937287,’ wrote White. ‘Immediately after receiving reports of this error, we made the decision to temporarily suspend automatic distribution of the update to avoid further customer impact while we investigate possible causes.’"

Just to be clear…this isn’t the SP that’s being pulled…it’s a pre SP1 update.

Anyone with autoupdates enabled already has it…including me. No problems here.

That’s not to minimize this, but this type of thing has happened before and it will undoubtedly happen again.

right. to be a little clearer:

"Microsoft has stopped automatically distributing a prerequisite piece of software for Vista Service Pack 1, following some customer complaints that it had caused system problems."

Is there a SP3 for XP?

any day now. (april sounds about right). it’s supposed to increase the speed difference between xp and vista (xp sp3 vs vista sp1). granted that’s a 32 bit version comparison

Really? That’s odd…I thought it was being released in March for autoupdates. I figured you got it through one of the Microsoft programs.

Again…it’s not the SP that’s being withdrawn…it’s a pre SP update that was already downloaded by the majority of Vista users. If you have autoupdates enabled you have it already.

The component that was withdrawn was the updated installer for the SP. FWIW, I’ve been running the RTM version of the SP for about a month without problems. —

No it was a regular download, shows up in the update history for today and my system info says "Service Pack 1".

Maybe I’m just lucky today. Intel offered me a refund for my wonky board.

The update mentioned in the SlashDot article was installed on the 15th.

AH. Vista Home Premium, laptop. XP Professional 64 bit Edition, desktop. LAN via cat5 and wireless thru D-Link DI524. Per M$ instructions, Networking on both machines is fine. Both systems see and ‘talk’ to each other perfectly through the LAN that I can tell. However, any files copied or moved from the Vista system to the x64 system OR the networked HD disappear from the new location.
Other than that, there are differences in Vistas security policy that are really overboard. In my own absolutely NON-humble opinion, Vista really is an unreliable pain in the ass. I have had to stop using my Vista laptop to do my work in conjunction with my x64 desktop. The lost files problem will not be tolerated.
M$ explains that is simply another part of the security protocol. I must be logged as the Administrator to prevent it. Not a user with full administrator priveledges.
I am pushing to have XP Pro x64 SP2 recovery disks provided for the laptop now.
McG.
