Thanks for answering ID and Ed.
I have tried creating a new layer and that didn’t work. I’ve tried creating a new layer with flattened version of the layers beneath…
control-alt-shift-E. Now I can’t even add text when I flatten the image. I am using the vertical text tool. I’ve tried various fonts. Still the same problem.

Ed, in Scott Kelby’s book on CS3 he explains how to set up a new page, drop in the image using "place" which makes it a smart object instead of move and then saving the file as a template where you can use it again and drop in different image.

I would really appreciate any help someone can give me so that I can open a new document, move an image on to the new document and then add text.

Is this a GIF file you are working from? It is possible that your Image>Mode is set to Indexed, which might be causing you problems. If so, change to RGB.

Don, it is set to RGB. I’ve tried saving as a pdf, psd, tif and reopening the file and still can’t add text.

Well I hate to admit this, because my mistake was so stupid but it helps to set your foreground color to black (or any other color) if you have a white background. I can’t believe how much time I wasted on trying to figure this out. I know some of you are laughing, well I’m laughing at myself too. Thanks to those of you who tried to help.

Well, you have one thing right: I’m laughing.

But with you, not at you. I think most of us have been caught up in that basic boo-boo. It’s one of those things that—when you figure it out the first time—you’re not likely to do it again.

Thanks for getting back to us on that. We have all done it at least once.
